Take Action Tuesday: Homecare workers, breast cancer and more

Where I live in the Midwest, we have several inches of snow—more than we've had all winter! So I suppose it’s the perfect day to engage in a little armchair activism. Here are a few issues making their rounds that a lot of homeschoolers and parents in general are concerned about. Feel free to add your voice to any campaigns that resonate with you.

Provide homecare workers with protection

I actually know several homecare workers, including one homeschooling mom, and they do work under some pretty harsh conditions. One even got sick from her job and was reprimanded for asking to have sick time! This action alert is calling for homecare workers to get minimum wage and overtime pay.

Prevention speaks webinars

Whether you or a loved one who suffers from breast cancer or you want to learn more about the disease and preventing it, check out these free webinars from Breast Cancer Fund. I have unfortunately lost two beloved women in my life to breast cancer, but I also know some amazing survivors who inspire me very much.

Speak out against school voucher program

I have heard all kinds of opposing and supporting viewpoints regarding school vouchers, but neither is really relevant in this case. A Louisiana voucher program is using textbooks that compare homosexuals to rapists and child molesters. It’s also using a religious-based math instruction program. I’m familiar with the math program, A Beka; I know several homeschooling families who use or have used it. My family does not use it, however, and it should not be a program enforced by public education. If you agree or just want to learn more, visit the petition at Care2.com, linked above.
