How do you celebrate?

Not Back to School Day!

Every year, I see so many parents post pictures of their kids on the first day of school on Facebook and I have to wonder what it is they’re celebrating. My parents didn’t take first day pictures of us growing up, but it really is easier to take photos and share them these days. Today was absolutely gorgeous outside and I mourned for all the kids who had to stay inside and miss it. Wood Sprite played outside most of the day. We had our annual Not Back to School Ice Cream Day, too. Here’s how the day went…

Wood Sprite got up and bounced on us both to wake us up. Indy is off on Wednesdays, so we were both sleeping after a long night of me working and him trying to stay up while I work!

She made herself chocolate waffles then promptly went outside so I could work. (She watched some Sid the Science Kid while she ate.) Indy went out and together they did some yard work and worked on his old classic car. She dug, did some experiments, ran around, chased the cats and then called me out to do some experiments with her. I took a break and we launched things from the back porch down to the driveway to see what would go faster and why. She also measured things with crayons.

We had leftovers for lunch and she drew me a bunch of pictures, including the headless horseman shown here. She’s a bit obsessed about him. While she drew that and other drawings she asked and learned about scythes, sais, thumb and hand placement in art, how to draw different facial expressions, etc.

Next we went for our Not Back to School ice cream at Orange Leaf. Then we headed to the pet store to get our monthly flea and tick treatment for the cats and some catnip. Wood Sprite asked for a lizard (she always does) but then promptly decided she wants a rat after the associate let her hold it and ask questions. She went up to him and asked him if she could hold it and he was very courteous to her.

Then we spent a good hour in Home Depot. We had to get a flapper for the toilet and some screen for two broken screen windows, but we also ended up checking out a bunch of things we all wanted to see. All three of us could spend the day there! Wood Sprite priced items, picked out things she would like to have, compared different models of appliances and contrasted various kitchens.

We came home and papa made dinner while Wood Sprite drew more pictures and made up songs. Then she went outside, climbed a tree and proclaimed herself Cleopatra, and made one of the cats an asp. Papa made dinner while I worked and answered a bunch of emails about 4H and homeschool activities, then we all ate. Then we watched How It’s Made and now she’s back to playing outside again as it gets dark. Not a bad Not Back to School Day, after all!
