Get ready for 'Star Trek Into Darkness'

I've always found it odd when the movie industry types call films released in mid-May "summer blockbusters" because really, it isn't summer yet. The blockbuster season is getting longer and longer, which is a great thing, especially considering that the network TV seasons are getting shorter and shorter. At least now we've got things to look forward to for entertainment.

Star Trek Into Darkness is the third major movie release in as many weeks, coming on the heels of Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby. I count Gatsby as a blockbuster now, because the box office results were stellar for it. Clearly, there's an audience for this Baz Luhrmann film, and I'll have much more to say about the movie in coming days. For now, the floor decidedly, and rightly, belongs to none other than Mr. Bad Robot himself, J.J. Abrams.

After rebooting the Star Trek franchise with a stellar film in 2009, J.J. Abrams returns for more this weekend with the release of Star Trek Into Darkness. To say the anticipation and buzz surrounding this film has been epic would be a gross understatement. We've been waiting nearly four years, after all.

Apparently, this film will be worth the wait, if you believe the extremely positive reviews that are coming out from those in the know. I've got my ticket secured for Saturday, but I hate even waiting that long. I loved the way Abrams took us back to the beginnings of the Enterprise crew's relationships with his Star Trek film. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto were outstanding as Captain Kirk and Spock. The character development was spot on, it was not at all overdone, and I'm hoping for more of the same with Into Darkness.

Here's one thing you do need to know, if you're planning on seeing Star Trek Into Darkness: There is a huge spoiler. Be careful what you read, OK? Some might argue it isn't a spoiler, but I believe it still is. That's all I'm going to say, just see this movie fairly soon.

How will Star Trek Into Darkness do at the weekend box office? Oh, it'll smoke Iron Man 3 and Gatsby. I have zero doubt that it will not only debut at number one, but it will possibly break the 2009 Star Trek's opening numbers as well. Some are speculating that this latest Star Trek could take in more than $100 million in its four-day opening weekend. I'm not at all surprised. We loved the last film, so why wouldn't we love this one? The trailers have all been fantastic. We're ready.
