Plus Day of Persons with Disabilities, moon news and Smart wigs

What’s Happening Wed: Your Assignment

Every Wednesday, we share a few news items, fun blog posts or other relevant stories together. Be sure to post your own in the comments.

A Magical Childhood has a wonderful “assignment” for us all to do in between our other holiday tasks. Trust me, you’ll like these tasks!

Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Did you know that 15% of the population lives with a disability? This year’s theme is “Break Barriers, Open Doors,” which I love. How can you break barriers and open doors in your community, with your family?

Have you heard about the moon lately? NASA wants to grow plants on it and Japan wants to use it as an energy source for Earth. Both could happen at the same time, right?

Would any wig fans out there be interested in a SmartWig from Sony that could give you GPS directions or vibrate when you get an email? Because living without being connected and constantly available isn’t living in the modern world, right?

Our great ape cousins are not the only creatures who use sticks as tools. Did you know that crocodiles and alligators use tools to lure water birds?

One of the world’s leading experts on hybridization is now saying that humans evolved from the offspring of a chimpanzee and pig. Is it even scientifically possible for these two species to reproduce?

Thinking about starting a second language with your child? InCulture Parent has some good ideas about how to get started. I don’t like how it mentions that it’s “critical” for children to visit native countries where languages are spoken since most families I know aren’t able to travel at a moment’s notice (what a way to turn people off from learning a language!), but the rest are good ideas.
