Plus post-antibiotics living, narcissism, an inspiring video and more

What’s Happening Wed: Unschooling is true to current science findings

If you’re not following Wendy Priesnitz’s blogs (or her magazines) and you unschool, I highly recommend her work. She always offers a clear, critically probed perspective supported by solid reasoning and research. Today she offers a piece about how unschooling, not compulsory schooling, reflects current science. She discusses how schools still operate based on the memorization model, whereas science proves that we do not learn that way, but through our own experiences and external motivation. Read it—it’s not long but it’s packed with info you’ll want to share.

The CDC says that soon we’re going to be in a post-antibiotic era, which is pretty scary. With all of our technology, we are still in danger of dying from simple, everyday infections—and our antibiotics would have probably been fine protecting us for many years to come if we hadn’t decided to use them in everything from livestock to handwash.

Here’s a lovely post about things to remember when our children are angry. It’s a good post to consider when it comes to us as well.

Have you watched this short video about Richie Parker, an engineer for NASCAR? It’s not about racing but about Parker himself, and it’s incredibly inspiring. My jaw dropped several times. My heart is just full after watching what this man has done to overcome his situation, and he really makes me think that you can do anything if you really want to do it.  Watch it here.

Pat Farenga says that less play, less empathy and more narcissism are creating the world we live in—and in a lot of cases, I am inclined to agree with him.
