Celebrating International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day, a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of women, the strides made towards women’s rights all around the world, and the current efforts to make women equal worldwide. Does your family celebrate every year, or are you new to the holiday? Either way, here are some great activities to try.

Little Passports has a famous women in history matching game to play. Try your own hand at the game, then challenge each family member to beat your score.

Find an event to participate in somewhere in or near your local community. There are over a thousand events, so chances are there is something within driving distance to where you live.

Teach your children about your favorite female heroes throughout history. Find out the history of International Women’s Day and share it with your family.

Check out this article from A Mighty Girl about 10 mighty girl heroes that you might not know about. Share it with everyone you know and consider exploring any one of these heroes much more deeply with your family, perhaps even creating a report or piece of art about your subject.

Have a gender equality discussion with your family. What strides have been made and what is still lacking? Include transgender issues, GLBT rights and other related topics. Discuss the reasons why people might want to oppress others and deny them equal rights.

Make an International Women’s Day poster or flyers to distribute. See if your library will let you put up a display to share with the community.
