Trailer alert: The first look at the 'RoboCop' remake
At long last, we've finally got our first look at the remake/reboot of one of my favorite science fiction movies of all time: RoboCop. The original was just so great, it's hard to imagine it any other way, but in the interest of fairness, I am trying.
Paul Verhoeven's 1987 RoboCop was, to me, a masterpiece. It worked on every possible level, and it's a cult classic with very good reason. When I heard that a remake was coming, I just groaned. Given Hollywood's iffy track record with reboots, can you blame me? I just really can't get 100 percent on board yet, though I'm going to keep following any and all information that comes out about this movie between now and the release date (February 2014).
Here's the trailer for RoboCop, directed by Jose Padhila.
ROBOCOP - Official Trailer (2014) [HQ]
Okay, thoughts anyone? My initial reaction, I'll be honest, was, "Wow, this is slick looking." My second reaction was, "This is not RoboCop at all, this is completely different."
Both of these statements, I'll argue, are true. This RoboCop looks way sleeker than the original and the differences, for fans of the first film, are pretty glaring. In the middle of my brewing hissy fit, The Voice of Reason, aka My Spouse, walked in, watched the trailer and said, "Man this looks so good."
You can only imagine the impassioned discussion that commenced in my humble abode. I believe I used words like "crazy" and "no way" and even "RoboCop is Daft Punk" before I finally, slowly, began to reconsider my stance. To me, this RoboCop just feels like an action-for-action's-sake kind of film. The first RoboCop was just a dirty, gritty and raw kind of movie. I struggle with that, but if I suspend all knowledge of the original movie, I get what my spouse is saying. It does look pretty cool in that respect.
Maybe I'm overly concerned with the fact that yes, this RoboCop is going to be totally mainstream. Points for casting Michael Keaton, too, because that always makes me smile. And is that Gary Oldman? More points. What do you guys think? Am I just a worry wart for nothing, or do we, as RoboCop fans, have a right to meltdown over this vastly different remake?
After thinking this through for a few hours, I've come to this conclusion: I'm going to cool my heels for now, wait for more video clips and information to come out and hope for the best where RoboCop is concerned.
