Wildly different than its Bali counterpart

Having now had the chance to experience both Kutas tourists go to in Indonesia, it is blatantly obvious to me that Kuta Lombok is in an entirely different spectrum than Kuta Bali. While my time on Kuta Bali didn’t leave me with the best taste in my mouth, Kuta on the beautiful island of Lombok was the exact opposite. In fact, visiting Lombok was one of the best surprises I’ve had while traveling.

Larger, more lush and less developed than Bali, Lombok is an island that seems to be hidden in plain view for travelers, but with much to offer. The Kuta region, though definitely known to tourists, is located in the southern part of the island.

While it is quickly becoming a surfing mecca for those looking to travel abroad to catch waves, the truth is that the entire area has yet to be hit by mass tourism. Food and accommodation are still cheap, and beside being barraged by hustlers, is a calm and welcoming place to spend way too much time.

While the Kuta area offers an incredible beach for lounging, if waves are what you desire, you do need to go elsewhere. For about $3.50 a day you can rent a scooter and head east or west to famous surf spots such as Gerupuk, Seger, Mawi and Desert Point.

Gerupuk is the most popular of the bunch, with boats available at $10 for three hours, taking you to different breaks in the secluded bay. Be aware though, some tourists have taken it upon themselves to try and scare away beginners. Don’t pay attention to these people because the locals, and most other surfers, are accommodating and chilled out.

If you are looking for a genuine Indonesia experience, mixed with a bit of western amenity, Kuta Lombok is the place to go. The people are beautiful, the price is right and the secluded beaches with clear, blue water are in abundance.
