Three free apps to improve your sketching skills.

Kindle drawing apps

You don't have to have a sketchpad and pencil to draw anymore. You can draw whenever you're inspired on your smartphones and tablets. We've covered some iPhone drawing apps for kids, but sometimes you need a larger drawing surface. Your Kindle Fire gives you a 7" screen (or 8.5 for the larger version) to practice your skills. Here are three free drawing apps for your Kindle.

How to Draw: This is one of my favorite drawing apps for the Kindle. As I've mentioned before, I'm not artistically inclined, but I've learned how to draw a few things over the years by watching others do it step-by-step. That's what this app does. You can choose from many different drawings like a turtle, a butterfly, a car, flowers and much more. The app will then show you how to draw it one easy step at a time. You can save your drawings and share them on Facebook. The app can be slow if you have a lot of other apps open, so be sure to kill any unneeded apps before using it.

Sketch n Draw: Use 14 different brushes to create any drawing you'd like. Your "pencil" can be any of a number of different colors. You can shake the device to clear your drawing. There are many options to save your creations, share them on your social networks or share them with other apps. One of the best features is that you can pinch and zoom (even on smaller Android phones) to create more detailed drawings.

Sketch Guru Handy Sketch Pad: Sketch Guru has 17 different brushes, pinch and zoom, and all the other features you'd expect a drawing app to have. The coolest feature is the ability to play back your sketch in movie mode to see your picture come to life. There are lots of sharing options: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social networks.

With any of these apps, using a stylus will give you much more control over your drawings. It's much easier to add shading, shadows and smudge effects when using a stylus rather than your finger. Either way, these apps are a lot of fun.
