How to peel a banana, separate an egg and de-seed a pomegranate.

Three amazing kitchen tricks

We all do these things, but I'm guessing there's a good chance you've never done them the way I'm about to tell you about and show you.

1. How to de-seed a pomegranate:

I've spent years getting my fingers and the counter top red by scooping pomegranate seeds out with a spoon or picking at them with my fingers. It turns out, all I had to do was put the darn thing under water and de-seed it there (say, in a bowl or the sink), and then pour it through a strainer to end up with a virtually mess-free method for getting the delicious pomegranate seeds out of the fruit. Wow. Watch the video and change your life in 1:30.

2. How to peel a banana:

"My whole adult life, I never knew the right way to open a banana. And now you do too." That's a great quote from the guy who made this video. His story is that he was walking around, like the rest of us, trying to open bananas by pulling on the stem. That is, of course, until his friend corrected him and showed him the way monkeys open bananas-- by pinching the other end and smoothly peeling the peel.

Watch the video, which has over three million views, to see what I'm talking about. Just ignore the fact that the guy is in his pajamas.

3. How to separate egg yolk from egg white:

My whole life, I've been doing it the same way. I crack open an egg into two halves, keep the yolk in one side, and pour it gently back and forth from half to half, letting the egg white spill gelatinously into a bowl below. You can see this method from the guy at the French Culinary Institute here.

You could use a water bottle! This is one of those things you find on YouTube and just feel your jaw drop when you watch. Basically you crack the egg open on a plate and suck the yolk up with a water bottle. Check out the video-- the magic happens at 0:53.
