Review: Venture Bros. ‘O.S.I. Love You’
This week’s offering of Venture Bros. features something that most of us long-time fans of the show have been awaiting ever since season 5 started - the return of Brock Sampson! Yes, Brock is back and the writers have also brought back more than a few other fun characters to join him. This time around, the O.S.I. agent has to face off against his long-time rival and lust-honey, Molotov Cocktease.
The story begins with Brock and his O.S.I. team going after Monstroso and Molotov. Then cut to a few hours later and it looks like both of their prey, even though successfully captured, are on the loose again. So it’s up to a group of O.S.I. black-hats to question the team and find out what happened.
The episode then goes through a series of flashbacks, detailing what everyone was doing while the breakout took place. As it turns out, Hatred, Dr. Venture, Dean and Hank were also all on board the O.S.I. hovercraft when everything went down. It seems that Hatred needed some sort of breast exam and the hovercraft was the best place to get it done.
Over the course of the flashbacks, we are turned on to a few bits of info. about the past of certain characters. We get a brief look at how Brock and Molotov met and a tidbit about the history of the Sovereign (and his relationship to the real David Bowie). We also see a return of some old side-characters, such as the Investors (who have come back to get rid of Monstroso once and for all) and “The Nozzle”. We also experience the untimely death of “The Nozzle”. Rest in peace, creepy machine.
In typical Venture fashion, this week is loaded with pop-culture references, from the obvious to the obscure. Hank is still in his sexy metal suit, but by the end of it the suit is destroyed (nooooooo!). And at the end, it looks like Brock and Molotov will be working together in the future.
This is a face-paced episode that gives us a bit of back-story, a bit of action, more than a few nods to long-time Venture Bros. fans and a healthy dose of the ludicrous atmosphere that has made the show so great over the years. I have to say, this was probably my favorite episode of the season thus far, and it’s not just because Brock and Molotov came back. If you missed it, you can always head over to the Adult Swim website and check it (and other episodes) out. Now where the heck is Doctor Orpheus!?
