Season 2, Ep. 12 - Not an outstanding episode, but the show is building up to blow soon

Review: Arrow ‘Tremors’

While I am all about Arrow using an episode here and there to build up the tension and get us ready for the inevitable showdowns that are to come, this week’s entry, ‘Tremors’ came in off the back of a similar storyline for last week. There is plenty going on this week, but the slower pace may have been premature. Still, other than a lack of intensity, there is little to complain about with this week’s installment.

We begin with Bronze Tiger being broken out of prison. You may remember him from earlier in the season (or was it back in season 1?). Basically, he’s been so ineffectual and boring that it’s easy to forget the guy. This time around he’s been recruited to steal a prototype of Malcolm Merlyn’s earthquake machine for a client that wishes to sell it to some bad people. Of course, Oliver heads out to stop him from achieving his goals.

In the meanwhile, Ollie has to train Roy to use his newfound powers without going crazy and smashing everything in site. Laurel continues to melt down, switching her addictions from pills to booze this time around. And Walter comes back (hurrah!) to convince Moira that she needs to run against Sebastian Blood in the race for mayor.

While there are a few key scenes in this week’s episode (mainly those near the end of the show), most of what goes on is clearly setting up so that more conflict can take place. Oliver will now have to choose between supporting Blood or his mother, Blood and Slade will no doubt try to off Moira, Roy is now a member of the team and, due to Laurel’s sinking state, Sara (aka Canary) is back.

The two things that I loved about this episode the most were the return of Walter (one of the best actors on the show by far) and the impending return of Canary. I’m still on the fence about whether Roy is a welcome addition to Team Arrow, though if he stops whining and complaining for at least 5 minutes I may make an effort to reconsider. Laurel’s story arc I like (contrary to most of the Arrowheads out there), but if it doesn’t go somewhere meaningful I will be sorely disappointed.

Next week brings back Canary along with a few folks from the deadly League of Assassins, including the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul, Nyssa. For a sneak peak at what to expect, head to this site and check out the trailer.
