People naming their kids after ‘Game of Thrones’ characters on the rise? Yup.

Media Hijinks - Strange Names, New Movies and Old Favorites

First on the list of media news this week, the geek obsession of naming their kids everything from Yoda to Hashtag has invaded yet another popular franchise.  This time around, Game of Thrones gets the treatment as a recent report has calculated the number of new baby girls being named Khaleesi at 146.  That’s just in the last few years, mind you, so there’s no telling how many are still expecting and will be jumping on the bandwagon.  To be honest, it’s not a bad sounding name, though I have to wonder at whether the kids are going to throw tantrums when they realize that their special names don’t come with a selection of dragon companions.

Second up, the coming of yet another console, though not on the same level as those who are official in the wars.  The OUYA is the recent creation of a $9 million Kickstarter campaign and just hit the market.  The games you can expect to see on OUYA aren’t going to be the giant, AAA games that Sony and Microsoft put out, but with a huge range of indie developers behind it, they will be plentiful.  The OUYA also has the ability run many apps, so you’ll be able to plug it in and stream video.  Best of all, this new creation only costs $99 to purchase, so it won’t break your bank.  For more info. on the OUYA’s specs, check out their official website.

Third on the list, an official release date for one of the CW’s most well-received shows of last year, Arrow.  Fans of the green archer and his wacky antics can expect to see him coming back this fall, premiering on Wednesday, October 9th.  Those that care can expect to see me continuing my Arrow reviews at approximately the same time.

Fourth up may be good news to some, but to the rest of us it’s little more than a good laugh.  The redundant movie sequel of the year award goes to… Taken 3.  Yup, they’re making a third in this series, despite the fact that pretty much everything that Liam Neeson loves has been taken already.  Apparently, the second film made even more than the first and the studio is eager to bring in more dollars.  Neeson, despite having said that he has no interest in another Taken project was lured in with the promise of $20 million.  I’m guessing this time around the bad guys will be taking his favorite coffee mug?

And finally, some great news for those of us that have been eagerly awaiting news of a potential Doctor Strange film being added to Marvel’s ‘Phase 3’.  Rumors are flying about that Marvel/Disney will be attempting to replace Robert Downey, Jr.’s role as the centerpiece of the Marvel universe.  RDJ already signed for Avengers 2 and 3, but has little interest in doing another Iron Man film, so the studio needs a new face.  If sources are to be believed, Doctor Strange may be that new face.  Unfortunately, these rumors, along with an official announcement of whether the doctor will even be a part of ‘Phase 3’ won’t be forthcoming until San Diego Comic Con.  Until then, I will be crossing my fingers.
