Media Hijinks - Movies Everywhere!

Well folks, this is the final installment of Media Hijinks. Luckily, I get to leave off on a more positive note than usual. While there is one bit of questionable news, most of this week’s developments have been positive. It looks like we’re going to be getting some interesting movies in the next few years, movies that will appeal to all tastes, from super hero fans to those of us that lived through the children’s shows of the 80s. Read on for all the juicy info.

First and foremost, it looks like the long-rumored third film in the Pee-wee Herman franchise may be making some headway. Judd Apatow (attached to produce and possibly to direct) was giving a talk this last week and said that they may be getting around to doing what is tentatively titled “Pee-wee Takes a Holiday”. Of course, Paul Reubens (the almighty Pee-wee Herman himself) is 61-years-old now. Then again, he also sold out his last Broadway show in 2010 to the tune of millions of dollars. Next up, it looks like the folks over at Fox have a ton of faith in the ability of their latest super hero flick, X-Men: Days of Future Past, to kick some butt and bring audiences flocking. For they are gearing up to expand their franchise even further. They’ve slotted three new movies for release in the upcoming years - a third Wolverine flick set for March 3^rd, 2017; a sequel to the still-unfilmed Fantastic Four is set to release on July 14^th, 2017; and a “mystery movie” is planned for July 18^th, 2018. That’s a lot of planning ahead. Me, I’m hoping that this show of faith is a solid indicator of how amazing DoFP will be. Considering it turned out to be one of the most expensive productions in history, it damn well better make them some money or Fox is going to implode.

Third up, some “WTF?” remake news. It looks like some folks are planning to reboot the American remake of The Grudge. It’s been less than 10 years since they adapted it for American audiences, so this seems kinda stupid to me. Not to mention that the Japanese version of the franchise will be releasing their 7^th installment this summer and the American franchise already made 3 movies. So why do this? There is only one answer - money.

And finally, an upcoming adaptation that may harken you back to your childhood. Jem and the Holograms is getting its own live-action movie. I can’t really remember too much about this old show, as I was busy watching more boy-centric cartoons when I was a kid, but so far the idea has received some very positive feedback from the world of the Internet. Given that it was one of the only female-led cartoons in the 80s, it could have a massive market waiting to purchase tickets. I only hope they update the hair on the main characters… I mean, 80s hair was a travesty that should never be revisited.
