An old-school side-scroller with some famous faces and exploding everything

Game Review: Broforce

Have you ever wanted to join up with a friend and play a game where you can take on such iconic roles as Robocop, John McClane, Blade, Ash, BA Baracus and more, all at the same time?  Ever wanted to use these famous faces (and their weapons) to blow the crap out of absolutely everything you can see?  Well, a game called Broforce has been put together specifically to appeal to those of us that are junked on the old, classic action flicks.  It’s as classic side-scroll styled game in which you get to play famous characters and blow up almost everything on the screen.

Of course, there are copyright issues to consider, so you don’t actually play “Robocop”.  Instead, each playable character has been renamed to match up with the “Bro” theme of the game.  Just a few examples include Rambro, Bro Hard, McBrover, Snake Brosken, RoBro Cop, BA Broracus and Bromando.  And there’s plenty more names where those came from.

The object of the game is to run sideways and kill all the baddies that get in your way.  Each character has two weapons they can use, one standard and another special that has a limited amount of uses.  Players must blow up terrorists, watch out for crazy suicide bombers, take on armored vehicles and battle bosses.  It’s all the stuff that makes a side-scroll shooter what it should be.  The developers are even working on some added content in the form of “Aliens” (not to be confused with the copyrighted kind, even though they look almost exactly the same).

With each level, players start as a random character from whatever selection they have available.  When you start the game, you only have a few at your disposal.  As you go through the game, you’ll find P.O.W.s that you can rescue.  Opening one of these cages changes your character to another random guy and when you rescue a set number of P.O.W.s the game adds a new face to your ever-growing selection.  Half the fun of Broforce is seeing who comes up next in the roster.  The game is in beta right now, so they’ve been adding new characters left and right.  With every update, you’ll have something new to look forward to.

As I’ve mentioned, the game is in beta, so there’s plenty of potential left as the developers keep adding stuff.  You can head to their website to pick up the “Brototype” and check the game out for free, or to pre-order the official release when it finally comes out.  Every fan of the old-style Nintendo side-scrollers should give this game a try.  You might be surprised at how truly fun and addictive it can be.
