Ten fun apps for St. Patrick's Day

Whether you plan to hit the local bars for a few pints on St. Patrick's Day, or stay home on the couch to watch the St. Paddy's Day parade, these apps will get you in the Irish spirit. Quiz yourself on Irish tradition, learn some slang, jazz up your photos or just give your thumbs a workout with some games. There's something for all ages here.

Kid-friendly apps:

A Lucky Pic Booth: This app lets you jazz up your photos with backgrounds, frames, art and filters. Doodle on the image or add text. You can even add audio messages to your photos. Upload them to share them on Twitter, Facebook or via e-mail. Available for free on iOS devices. The ads are pretty annoying, though.

Bubble Blast St. Patrick's Day: This fun game from the Bubble Blast series is much like Bejeweled and just as addictive. Burst shamrocks, hats, balloons or a pot of gold. Play the game in puzzle mode with more than 6400 levels, or play free-style in arcade mode. Available for free on iOS and Android devices.

Clover Touch: This app is perfect for younger kids. Simply tap the clovers on the screen and turn them into gold coins. Once you collect 1000 coins, you'll win a pot of gold. Clover Touch is available for $0.99 on iOS devices.

Eggbot's Irish Adventure: While this may be too difficult for the younger kids, the older ones and adults will find it highly addictive. The game has 32 levels, one for each county in Ireland, with some levels containing multiple puzzles. You are to help Eggbot travel through each county in his quest to obtain 1000 gold coins. Don't download this app if you have a lot to do this St. Paddy's Day weekend. It's hard to put down. Available for $0.99 for iOS devices.

For adults:

A St. Patrick's Day Quizzle: Quiz yourself on your knowledge of Irish traditions and facts. With more than 300 questions, this edition of Quizzle will get everyone in the Irish spirit. This app is fun for the whole family, but it's hard to put down. This quiz app is available free for iOS devices.

Find My Tap: Beer connoisseurs will love this app. It helps the sophisticated beer drinker find their favorite draught and craft beers. The location-based search helps you find the bars closest to you. If one of your favorite joints isn't on the list, you can add it to their database. Find My Tap is available for free on iOS and Android devices.

Ireland's Greatest One Liners: If you're looking for some one-liners to throw around at your local pub this weekend, this app may be your saving grace. It features 48 zingers and one-liners from Sean, an Irish character who sits at the bar in his local pub to share his Irish insight with you. This app is available for iOS devices for $0.99.

Irish Proverbs: This app features hundreds of Irish quotes and sayings to pass along to your friends this St. Patrick's Day, or any day, really. When do sayings like "A good start is half the work" ever go out of style? Just shake your phone or tap the button for a new saying. Irish Proverbs is free for iOS devices.

Leprechaun Me: Turn yourself into a leprechaun with this fun app. There are more than 120 items to add to your photos like beards, hats, beer, pointy ears, pipes and more. Take a photo or choose one from your albums to decorate with items from the art folders. Share your newly leprechauned self on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest. The app is available for iOS devices for $2.99.

Leprechaun Name Generator: Get your very own Leprechaun name this St. Paddy's Day with this simple-to-use name generator. Input your first and last name and it churns out a name that's just for you. My name, oddly enough, is "Botox O'Callaghan." Touché, app. It didn't even need a picture to come up with that little gem. This would be fun for kids except that it comes up with slightly inappropriate names. When I entered my son's name, for example, it came up with "Junk in the Trunk" O'Callaghan. Just keep it to adults with this one. Available free for iOS devices.

For those heading to the pubs this weekend, I'll leave you with this piece of advice from my Irish Proverbs app: "When the drink is in, the sense is out."
