Get ready, get set...

Starting a big knitting project

Thinking about knitting your first sweater, or something truly huge like an afghan? Be prepared!

1. Do you have enough yarn?
You probably don't. In fact, I can almost guarantee it. You had better go buy some more. That way you will be certain to have a ton of yarn leftover at the end of your project. Almost enough yarn to knit another one.

It's either that or run out of yarn before you finish, though. There is no middle ground.

2. What are you going to watch?
A big knitting project demands a big television-watching or audiobook-listening commitment. This would be a good time to start listening to the Game of Thrones audiobook series, or start watching a long-running show like Dexter on Netflix.

3. What else are you going to knit?
At a certain point, your project will be far too large to haul around with you. What are you going to knit at lunch, or at knit night? Be sure to slot in some smaller knitting projects (like socks or dishcloths) so that you have something portable to take with you. I once tried to take a half-finished afghan to knit night. Never again.

4. Are you sure?
This is going to take you a while. On average, about twice as long as you think it will. If there is some knitting you need to get done before then - like a birthday or Christmas gift - maybe you should do that stuff first instead. Never underestimate the ability of a large project to take far longer than you would have thought to finish.

5. Get ready to take notes
Assemble pen, paper, a notebook, and a copy of your pattern. Be ready to make notes about your progress and the changes you have made to the pattern. Then forget to do all of them. Think, "I'll remember." Fail to remember. It is the way of life.
