Geek Crafts: Five uses for old CDs

Got a bunch of old CDs or DVDs lying around that have no useful purpose? There are tons of awesome ways that you can use them in crafts!

1. Mosaics
This crafter cut up CDs into little squares and glued them to a cheap Ikea wood framed mirror for an instant upgrade. You could also glue CD mosaic tiles onto flower pots, bangle bracelets, clock faces, jewelry boxes, picture frames, and anything else that could use a little bit of glam.

I love this idea because when cut into little rectangles and squares, they don't even look like pieces of CD. They look almost like a postmodern kind of mother of pearl. Terrific!

2. Art deco jewelry pieces
With some craft scissors and a few basic jewelry supplies, this crafter made a beautiful necklace and pair of earrings from an old CD. You could also cut the CD into rectangular strips and let them dangle like a futuristic version of a coral necklace.

3. Shiny disco ball
Along the lines of the mosaic mirror frame above, you can cut your CD into little pieces and glue them onto a foam crafting ball to make a cute little disco ball.

4. Weaving
This is a great craft for kids! Like an updated non-religious God's eye, CDs can be repurposed as a sort of small circular loom. All you need is some old CDs, yarn scraps, and some sort of needle to thread them with (the crafter cut out wedges from plastic lids and used a hole punch to make the eye). They look really colorful and fun all grouped together!

5. Spindle case terrarium
If you have an old spindle case (and I am sure that you do) you can easily turn it into an adorable little terrarium. This would be particularly great as an office decoration, because offices often suffer from excessively dry air, which plants do not appreciate.
