Crafters are coming.

Fandom crafts: Game of Thrones crafts

The insanely popular epic fantasy series Game of Thrones just begs for crafting tributes, and crafters are well up to the challenge. (Not very crafty? Buy a black sheepskin rug and drape it over your shoulders inside-out. Boom: Night's Watch cloak.)

Knitting

No matter which house is your favorite, someone has drafted out the sigil for you to use in your favorite project. (Reminds me of the Harry Potter fandom, with its ample color coordination skills.)

My favorite set of house projects is the series of fingerless mitts by designer Anna Richardson. She offers her mitts not just in the familiar house sigils of Stark and Lannister, but the others as well, including Baratheon, Targaryen, Mormont, Tully, Arryn, Greyjoy, Tyrrel and the Night's Watch.

In the "inspired by" category we have Arya's Water Dancer Cowl, a "Winter is Coming" dishcloth pattern (this would work well for an afghan which also would be hilarious), the Winterfell Cowl and Socks for Stannis.

Or go another way: Pick up a skein of yarn from Etsy user knitandfibercreation's Game of Thrones-inspired colorways, and use it to make whatever you like.

Crochet

There are so many Game of Thrones amigurumi, I don't even know where to begin. This Livejournal user's line-up is probably my favorite collection, partly because the crafter made each figure a slightly different height so that they are all in scale. Nice touch!

Crafty Crafty has a link to some free crochet patterns to make your own amigurumi Game of Thrones characters and dire wolves. (I feel like you don't really need specific patterns for these, just a basic pattern and then the creativity to customize them well. Any basic figural pattern would probably do the trick.)

Papercraft

Oh I love papercraft so much. Not because I do it - when it comes to cutting and pasting things in real life, I am all thumbs and easily frustrated. I get sloppy. But I love to swoon over the work of others, like this papercraft Iron Throne that is strong enough to support the weight of an action figure.

In researching this topic I also found a subculture of Minecraft papercraft which is kind of blowing my mind. This user created his own Renly Baratheon in Minecraft and has also created papercraft patterns for you to print out, cut and glue together your own blocky Minecraft Renly Baratheon. It's memes all the way down.

Jewelry

Oh, so much beautiful jewelry inspired by Game of Thrones! Just look at all this gorgeous stuff I found on Etsy. From replica prop-inspired pieces like "Hand of the King" pendants and brooches, to jewelry inspired by the show like earrings with the House Stark dire wolf sigil.

On the romantic front, I'm surprised (although I probably shouldn't be) by how many matching items I found for couples featuring the endearments shared by Daenerys and Khal Drogo. Whether you and your partner want to share keychains, necklaces, pendants, or bracelets embossed with "my sun and stars" and "moon of my life," Etsy sellers have got you covered.

Cross Stitch
If you are into cross stitching, I'm pretty sure I actually spotted some women working with embroidery hoops in one episode of the show. Deviant Art user blacklupin has created some gorgeous cross stitch patterns in the house banners, for bookmarks. I love the colors and graphic design sense here!

Baking
Why not pay tribute to your favorite fantasy franchise while eating a delicious treat at the same time? There are a ton of baked Game of Thrones crafts, including in particular some really gorgeous collections of cupcakes like these from Regali Kitchen.

If you want something a little more manageable for your next viewing party, here's a tutorial on making Game of Thrones cupcakes that won't have you meticulously assembling house sigils in frosting. (Who wants to eat fondant, anyway? I want frosting!!!)

Here's a great tutorial on making your own dragon egg Easter eggs, just be sure not to leave them on a funeral pyre because I can guarantee they will not turn into dragons.

For a true Game of Thrones dinner party, you will want to serve food that was mentioned in the books. The website FictionalFood.net has all of your fictional food needs, including a whole sub-section just for Game of Thrones food. The lemon cake looks delicious!
