They're gentler on your baby's skin than store-bought wipes, and you'll save money, too.

Save money with homemade baby wipes

I didn't start making my own homemade baby wipes and wipes solution out of frugality, but I have found it to be cheap. I started doing it because my son needed something that was easier on his skin, and I couldn't find anything in the stores. Thanks to Google and frugal moms everywhere sharing their tips, I found something that works perfectly for his sensitive bottom and costs much less than the disposable sensitive baby wipes.

To make your own baby wipes, just cut up a piece of fabric into six inch squares. You don't even have to be that precise, just cut it up. At my son's baby shower, we received no less than 30 receiving blankets and were thankful for every single one. We didn't actually need that many blankets, though. Some were donated, and some were cut up for these wipes. Receiving blankets are super soft, absorb liquid well, and slide over the skin easily.

For the wipes solution, you'll need:

  • ¼ cup oil
  • ¼ cup mild soap
  • 1 cup water

You can use various types of oil for the wipes solution. If you like using baby oil, but your child has sensitive skin, try an organic baby oil. Honestly? Olive oil works just fine. Any kind of mild soap will do, as long as it's gentle enough for your baby's skin. I use his regular bath wash (made for his sensitive skin and eczema). Mix all these up together, and there you have your wipes solution.

To use the wipes and solution, I've read that some moms prefer keeping the liquid in a spray bottle. You can then spray the wipe with the solution, or spray your baby's bottom directly. I'd go for spraying the wipe so you can warm it up in your hands before using it.

Personally, I just use an empty baby wipes container. I put the squares of material in and pour the liquid on top. I turn them over a few times, smash them down, and make sure all the pieces of fabric are wet. You can soak anywhere from 16-25 squares, with liquid to spare using it this way. Just pull one out whenever you need it, and launder the wipes as you do the other baby's things. Be sure not to wash them in with clothes, though, as the oil may stain other fabrics.
