A family meal at a restaurant doesn't have to break the bank.

Save money dining out

Dining in a restaurant can be costly enough for just one person. But dining with a family? Forget about it. That bill can add up quickly, especially with children who are often picky eaters. Going out to eat as a family doesn't have to break the bank, though. Here are a few ways you can save when dining in restaurants, no dine and dash required.

Drink water.

Tap water is free and it's better for you. If plain water isn't your thing, jazz it up with a slice or two of lemon or lime. It's very refreshing, cuts down on calories (because you'll probably eat many more calories when you're out than at home), and you can have as much as you want. For those who crave some caffeine, many restaurants also serve coffee for free.

Have an appetizer instead of an entrée.

Aren't appetizers delicious? At many restaurants, the appetizer plate is huge and is more than enough for a meal for one person. Appetizers are usually cheaper than the entrees, and just as tasty. Just have the waiter or waitress bring it out with everyone else's food to avoid having to share your appetizer.

Wait for discount nights for kids.

Some of our favorite local restaurants have policies where children under two eat free. Sadly, we can only benefit from this for four more months. Several places also offer kids' meals at half price on certain nights (Tuesdays around here), and this is usually good for children under 12. Sites like My Kids Eat Free! can help you identify the bargain restaurants in your area.

While dining out is not the most cost-effective option for feeding your family, it is nice to get out once in a while without the worry of putting together a meal. Do you have any money saving tips for dining out? Share them in the comments.
