Memorial Day was one of my favorite holidays as I was growing up. As I got older, I realized the significance of the day and did my best to honor and remember those who've given their lives in military service. Still, the day is somewhat of a summer kick-off for many. It's a long weekend, school is nearly over and summer is almost here. If you're looking for some frugal activities to do over the long weekend, try one or more of these suggestions. Don't forget to pay your respects to the fallen, too.
Go for a picnic
Nothing says summer quite like eating lunch on a blanket and slapping the bugs off each other. Really, though, I love picnics. They don't have to be elaborate. If the weather's nice, simply throw some sandwiches together, add a few fruits, veggies and snacks, pack some drinks and you're off. You can go almost anywhere for a picnic; the local lakes are a couple of my favorite spots.
Go camping
Camping takes a bit more planning but it's a wonderful activity for the whole family. The weather's not too hot or too cold. In this area, the snakes and insects aren't out in full force yet, so you don't have to worry too much about the creepy-crawlies that may get into your tent. Besides, there are few things in life as good as roasted marshmallows and S'mores around a campfire.
Have a movie marathon
I realize not everyone loves the great outdoors. If that's you, or if the weather isn't cooperating for outdoor fun, have each family member pick out two DVDs to watch together. Ditch the flavorless, healthy popcorn and indulge in movie-style popcorn one night. You can find movie-sized boxes of candy at your local Dollar Tree for $1 each.
What are your plans for Memorial Day weekend?
