Family fun without breaking the bank.

Free summer activities for kids

It's almost summer and school will be ending soon. That means you'll have lots of time for family fun. You'll be part of their entertainment every single day for the next few months. To avoid that dreaded phrase "I'm so bored" without spending a lot of cash, try these fun, free summertime activities. I've also included links to hundreds of other activities to make your summer a success.

When the weather is bad

Even though summer's on the way, that doesn't mean that all your days will be sunny. Summertime also brings with it plenty of thunderstorms (at least in this area). To avoid being pent up when it's rainy out, try a fun indoor activity.

  • Your local library is sure to have a summer reading program. Here, kids can listen to stories, get snacks, take part in reading competitions and much more. These programs are usually offered free to the public; all you need is a library card for your child.
  • To get some hands-on activities in, go to the Lowes Build and Grow activities. These are offered on the weekends and are absolutely free. You'll need to register for the activities in your area. Your child will get the chance to complete a wooden craft and they'll receive an apron, goggles and other tools just for participating. I believe Home Depot has a similar program, but there are no stores in my area.

When the weather is awesome

When the weather is nice, by all means, head outdoors! Everyone needs fresh air now and then. Head to one of the local parks, go for a swim, or kick a ball around. Here are a couple more ideas. Don't forget to pack a picnic for these outdoors trips.

  • Head to a National Park. National parks have several fee-free days during the summer so kids can enjoy the great outdoors. All national parks are free on August 25, but remember that most national parks are free all the time.
  • Go fishing at a local stream or lake. Around here, there are seldom fees for fishing, but for those lakes that do charge a small fee, they have certain days open to the public free of charge.
