In honor of Christmas, I’d like to dedicate this week’s posts to the season. No matter what you celebrate—or even if you don’t celebrate, but have a story that relates to the theme—please share your experiences and stories here.
For our first discussion, I want to know about funny family stories and jokes. My last name is Schmidt, so you can guess the types of jokes we like to use. You’ve probably even seen our favorite family joke on cards or sweatshirts—Santa stuck in an outhouse, saying, “I said the SCHMIDT house!” Hardy har har, right? I used to hate that one, but now it’s pretty much a staple in our family culture. It doesn’t bother me a bit, but I do love that Wood Sprite will not be teased for her last name in school like I did. (She does have a friend who needles her about her first name, however, because it’s something that you can eat.)
I miss the storytelling days of my past, when the older family members would share stories around my grandmother’s kitchen table while they played cards or Scrabble or just hung out. It breaks my heart; when a family matriarch passes away, the infrastructure just seems to crumble. I look forward to telling more stories to my little girl and hopefully one day I’ll have grandkids and nieces and nephews to tell them to, too.
Does your family have a favorite holiday joke or story they like to share? Post it in the comments below.
