Plus hating your own art and bringing back mammoths

What’s Happening: Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Does your family celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss? Although I’m no fan of his misogynistic views, we are still fans of his books and we plan on celebrating with some Seussical reading and maybe a visit to the Magic House, where local celebrities will be reading his books aloud on Saturday and Sunday. If you need some ideas, Homeschool Creations has 30+ ideas on their blog.

Why do people hate their own work so much? I’m no Woody Allen or Bruce Springsteen, but when I get any kind of compliment on a book or drawing I do I shrug it off and wince, talking about its flaws. I never end up with the piece of art I set out to create—especially when it comes to my books—and I know a lot of writers who feel the same way. Maybe we should at least learn to take a compliment and keep the feelings to ourselves.

If scientists are really bringing back animals from extinction, I have a very, very bad feeling. Okay, if it’s just passenger pigeons, a species that we wiped out ourselves, I don’t feel as bad—but if we take it to the extremes, I think things could go blockbuster movie wrong. Not only were these species sent into extinction by natural events, but we are currently sending several species into extinction daily with our far from natural habits! Are they even considering our eco system at all, and why focus on bringing back species in the first place when they need to focus on saving those we are destroying? As absolutely amazing as it would be to see a mammoth or another extinct species alive, I don’t like it.
