Plus “corn sugar,” mass extinction, gamer dreaming and more

What’s Happening: Common core alignment

Like many homeschoolers, I am having a lot of trouble finding information about the new Common Core standards and what they will actually mean for our community. So many people are trying to be helpful, sharing resources and links that they find, but so much of the information is biased and difficult to really break down. This piece from Show-Me Daily pretty much sums up our concerns: how the new standards are going to affect SATs, ACTs and college in general. If anyone has really good, specific information to share (especially from unbiased sources), I’d love to see it. Leave your links below in the comments.

If you’re a parent who avoids high fructose corn syrup as much as possible (and most of the parents I know do), you might want to read about this campaign to change its name to “corn sugar.”

Monsanto is talking about going organic. Feel free to laugh with me over that one.

Right now, we are on the cusp of the sixth mass extinction on Earth, largely caused by human hands. Between 20 and 30% of species are at risk if the planet continues its current course. This is definitely something to discuss with your family.

Pesticides are making bees smaller. They’re also probably wiping out bees in general.

Here’s some very interesting news for gamer friends out there: gaming can actually increase lucid dreaming. It makes sense: you spend more time in alternative realties, controlling these worlds, so why not be able to control the ones that visit you while asleep?
