Plus homeschool cooperatives & teaching the Olympics

Weekly Medley: DIY Valentine gifts

Today we attended a Girl Scout Day at the history museum, and I must confess that I was a walking zombie. Indy is back on a nighttime schedule at work, which means he sleeps much of the day and Wood Sprite and I are largely on our own. I’m working a lot at night again, and going sleepless is not as easy in my 30s as it was in my 20s. I’m pretty exhausted and crabby, which is not fun for anyone, so I was already not much of a happy camper to be around!

That said, when the girls started to learn about the Olympics in the galleries, I felt myself tense up. They mostly learned about the history of the Olympics and how they were once hosted in St. Louis, so that was fine, but it reminded me that I need to talk to Sprite about the current status of the Olympic games as well as the human rights violations associated with them. We make it a point to boycott things we do not support, and this is another on my list.

Something else on my radar this week is our homeschooling cooperative group. We belong to a small local group as well as a large city group, and Friday was our first day at the city group. It is starting out to be a strong semester, and I’m pushing myself past my shyness to really reach out, help out and ensure that Wood Sprite makes connections and enjoys her experience. How is your co-op doing this semester so far?

Finally, we have been making DIY valentines for friends, loved ones and each other all week because Wood Sprite is very much in the spirit! She’s been making lots of heart-shaped rock pets (her latest all had personalities reminiscent of the seven dwarves). How are yours coming along?
