I’ll never forget my dad coming home on Valentine’s Day and bringing my mother flowers and jewelry—and little boxes of chocolates for all of us girls. There were three of us, so Dad had four valentines! My parents were pretty busy, but they took time to make us feel special.
That’s something that we try to do for Wood Sprite, too. We made countdown calendars for Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas—her favorite holidays. For each one, we have a box that we use where she gets to pick a little treat or activity per day. The Valentine’s Day one, pictured here, was a tackle box that I modified by cutting out some of the inserts.
This year, her big valentine for Valentine’s Day is a Jack Skellington plush doll, which she is going to LOVE. Her dad surprised me this year and ordered her a mini strobe light, too. She has fallen in love with colored lighting and she’s going to love that, too. In her countdown box, she has mostly crafts (today we made Jack Skellington valentine garland, for example), with a couple of tiny toys thrown in. I usually get these from quarter machines or the carnival and party supply store.
Something else we are doing new this year is a Valentine’s dance! We’re meeting up with a bunch of homeschoolers for a dancing through the decades type dance and having treats, root beer floats, a DJ and the works. Sprite is pretty excited about her first dance!
What about you? How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day with your children, if at all?
