Celebrate and protect this majestic king of beasts

Today is World Lion Day

Today is World Lion Day, a day to celebrate and protect the lions in our world. Here are just a few things you can do in honor of World Lion Day.

Learn about lions with your family. Look them up online, watch lion videos, play lion games and really get to know these great cats. Visit the library and check out some great lion books and movies if possible. Head to your local science center or similar museum and find out if they have a lion exhibit. If so, visit it and learn even more about these animals.

Take action for lions by requesting that they be listed as an endangered species and be issued the same protection as other threatened animals. Did you know that we have seen a 50% decline in the lion population in the past 30 years? There are only an estimated 32,000 lions left in the wild, which is largely due to loss of habitat, trophy hunting and other human involvement. Like so many other cases of species decline and loss, this is due to human action. And it is human action that can prevent the further decline of the lion species.

Make lion crafts with your family. These lion faces are simple, and this friendly lion is a great project for elementary-aged kids. This Lion Pinterest board has everything from crafts to lion treats and meals to cool photos and coloring sheets. Draw your own lions, or just make yourselves into lions with face paint, yellow or brown clothes, or make a lion’s mane from a paper bag.
