And no more conflict minerals from Nintendo

Take Action Thursday: Stop honor killings

It’s been months since I’ve offered a take action day. Normally I do these on Tuesdays, but the recipes (Tasty Tuesdays) seem to be much more popular so I started doing those more often instead. Today, however, I saw a few petitions going around that I really wanted to share. Let me know if you like Take Action days and I’ll incorporate them more often.

Speak up against honor killings. Around 5,000 women are killed every year for bringing “dishonor” on their families, which is usually something like dressing “inappropriately,” marrying someone they love or divorcing someone they don’t. Of course, no act justifies this heinous custom and it’s high time to stop it.

It sounds like Nintendo is being purposefully evasive about the conflict minerals used to make its products. We tend to carelessly switch from one tech product to the next without even considering the people who were kidnapped, forced to mine for the minerals in our phones, computers and games, and died to make us these products. Sign this letter to ask them to make sure their products are completely slave-free.

Ask the USDA to investigate GMOs before they approve crops for us to eat that contain them. If these things are Agent Orange resistant, they must be pretty strong—and possibly dangerous. I remember that one of the first online campaigns I became involved in during college was The Campaign, a movement to simply get GMOs labeled. We are STILL waiting for that day more than 10 years later.
