Epic is the best we’ve seen…so far.

Summer Media Picks

In the last week, we’ve seen three—okay, two and a half—summer family movies, and I wasn’t incredibly impressed with anything yet. Here’s what we’ve seen so far:

Epic. Epic started out as an epic failure because the theater’s sound wasn’t working! We were given comp tickets and came back another day. It was, however, the best of all of the movies so far. It was enjoyable—not as amazing as last year’s Brave or even a few other awesome summer movies from years past, like How to Train Your Dragon or Despicable Me, but it was good enough to want to see again. Wood Sprite wants to buy it. It has a great heroine, near-equal representation (at least, better than any of the other movies) across the board, laughs and a decent plot.

Despicable Me 2. Well, it wasn’t despicable, at least—but it wasn’t even half as good as the first movie. Like a lot of sequels, it felt like it had the forced elements of its predecessor included to try and hook the audience without success. So much of it felt out of character, and it felt like the girls just weren’t included as much as they were in the first movie. Plus, every time you turn around, Gru is hitting a woman or a woman’s being yanked around or abused in another way! Really?? I’m all about equal representation regarding falls and stupid humor but this was outrageous. It made me hate the movie a little.

Monsters University. We took Wood Sprite to see this at the drive-in and it was the second movie, so she got sleepy and we had to leave in the middle of it. That said, I wasn’t very impressed with the first half. I liked how they stayed consistent with the original movie from what I saw, but the characters—all of them—seemed really one-dimensional and, dare I say it, boring. Who knows, maybe it picks up later in the movie; we’ll have to try to see it again sometime.
