Sometimes I just can’t get over how much moms criticize each other. We should be supporting, encouraging and helping one another—not getting snippy about who wears cloth diapers versus who buys them from Paper or Huggie or whatever. The great breastfeeding debate is one of the worst ones that boggles my mind.
On the one hand, you have staunch supporters who bully everyone into breastfeeding. Yes, it’s best for your baby; it has hundreds of benefits. It’s good for you, too, and it’s easy. BUT it’s not a choice everyone can make, and people need to respect that. I have written about how hard it was for me to watch my baby drink formula when my own supply just stopped, even after working with a specialist on a daily basis. Lay off the moms who do not breastfeed; it’s a personal decision.
(By all means, though, go on giving it to Nestle and anyone manufacturing formula by unsafe means or with false claims—they totally need to be reigned in and forced to make only safe, quality foods, period, as does every other business.)
On the other hand, you have folks who are so disgusted by breastfeeding that they don’t want moms to do it in public! Seriously? That is the most natural thing in the world! It’s way more unnatural that you drink milk from a cow’s udder, people; do you not get that? Just as it’s your choice not to breastfeed, it’s another mom’s choice to do so, and you need to respect that, too.
What’s the worst breastfeeding story you’ve got? Feel free to post it anonymously or to finally get something off your chest after your MIL, your mom, or even a perfect stranger ruined your day. No judgment here, moms! Check out this mom's moving words (launguage warning!) for inspiration.
