Arr, matey.

Septmeber 19 is Talk Like a Pirate Day

Do you celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day? For all of the different animals, mythological beasts and even cultural figures (the Headless Horseman, Marty McFly) that Wood Sprite is into, pirates are not one of her things. We have yet to participate in Talk Like a Pirate Day beyond a random Arrgh here or there. This year, though, she’s indicated an interest in taking part in the holiday, so we may do something more this time around.

What will you be doing? Here are some ideas.

Dress like a pirate—of course! I helped my middle sister dress up as a pirate for Halloween once and it was so much fun. I messed up her hair, twisted it in weird braids and helped her with her makeup.

Watch your favorite pirate movie. Wood Sprite really likes one pirate movie, the animated version of Sinbad. If you haven’t seen it, check it out—it’s pretty cute. There are plenty of other pirate movies too, of course, from Peter Pan to Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.

Create a map and encourage your family to search for some kind of treasure. Hide a treasure box and fill it with candy, small toys or art supplies.

Make some pirate art. Include mermaids, krakens, and any other kinds of related creatures that you would like. Use it as the scenery for your own pirate play or create smaller illustrations for a pirate book the whole family can pitch in with.
