Watching it again with Wood Sprite makes me love it even more.

Revisiting Once Upon a Time

As the snow piled up and the temperatures dropped below zero this winter, Wood Sprite talked us into watching Once Upon a Time with her on Netflix. Although she has been disturbed by a scene here and there (werewolves and headless people, for example), overall it’s been a very positive experience. Watching it with her makes me love it even more (spoilers ahead).

The fact that the main characters are mostly women is not lost on her. She gets so excited, cheering on Snow White (“She’s awesome!”) and Emma. She also loves Henry and Charming, as well as Mulan (we are in season two) and Red. In fact, she had me pretend to be Granny one day while she was Red when we cleaned out her closet and found a red hoodie.

When we watch Emma take the place of the stereotyped handsome prince, fighting the dragon, kissing Henry to break the curse and generally standing up against all things evil, she has a real hero she can relate to. Wood Sprite just adores the show, and it makes me wish I’d had a show to watch like this when I was a kid. I think my equivalent at her age was probably Star Trek: The Next Generation, which I watched with my mom. I did think that Counselor Troi and Dr. Crusher were pretty awesome, but they were certainly not the main characters.

So the only problem is that she wants some Once Upon a Time action figures to play with. Anyone have ideas for that particular request?
