Rainy day ideas
Rain is in the forecast all weekend for us, knocking out a few outdoor plans we had in store. No sweat—there are plenty of other fun things to do! Here are a few things we might do. Feel free to join us, even if from afar.
Make mud pies! Our yard is a swamp, and I can assure you that Wood Sprite is going to be caked in mud tomorrow. Her kitchen in the yard is SO muddy and perfect for molding. She’s also got some buckets and containers out to catch water (some with mud in them, some without). She used to love to measure the rain but now she likes to see what she can collect by morning.
Head to Home Depot at 9 a.m. to do a free construction activity. The ones near us do this every first Saturday of the month. Check your local Lowe’s to see when they have Build and Grow clinics, too—they are also free.
Try some deep sensory yoga. This little guide looks wonderful! Wood Sprite and I do some very basic poses but we both want to learn more.
Try your hand at these adorable ladybug treats.
Learn some old conversation etiquette. Or laugh over it!
Make some homemade dishwasher pellets.
Make some awesome pizza roll pretzels and watch a movie. Need a suggestion? Wreck It Ralph, The Hobbit and Rise of the Guardians are all on DVD now! Arthur Christmas is another lovely newer movie, and I could really watch Brave or The Secret World of Arietty any day of the week (and often have them on as I work!). Wood Sprite is really into Matilda, Madeline and Captain Planet (the latter is on the Boomerang channel; I set them up to tape on our DVR box) lately. Need some funds? Grab a free Redbox DVD code here.
Have some funds or passes for a theater movie? Don’t miss The Croods. It’s absolutely adorable and hilarious.
YouTube is also a wonderful source for free movies. Wood Sprite and I watched the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie on it last week, and if you’ve never seen Bored Shorts, you are in for a treat! It is hilarious but clean family fun. My friend J. got me hooked on them last year and I never fail to crack up while watching. If you want to watch them in order, start with “Punching Cars.”
