Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

The first Percy Jackson film, The Lightening Thief, disappointed every single fan of the book that I know. It was the worst book to screen adaptation, and I don’t mean that it just took a few creative liberties. The entire cast (including the gods) got both physical and personality (not to mention age) makeovers, the heroine’s intelligence and heroism was completely downplayed, and every cool scene was missing. In short, it was a random movie that just included the book characters’ names for its characters.

The second film was not much better. The same problems were in the film version, though I was happy to see Annabeth look slightly less sexpot-y and a tiny bit more the tomboy we know and love. I’m not shaming her, either—I’m shaming whoever glamoured her up to change the person she was. I’ve talked to a few people who did not read the books who enjoyed the movies, but every person I know who’s read them did not enjoy the movies, which is just too bad.

Let me tell you, if you haven’t read Rick Riordan’s books, you are missing out! Percy kills a beast in the first chapter of book one. In book two, you miss the greatest centaur battle ever, and in book one, you miss an epic battle in the St. Louis Arch, which I was particularly looking forward to seeing.

I really recommend reading the books. And as much as I have issues with just about every book-to-screen piece I come across, this is the one that I hands-down do not recommend.
