Eggnog is one of those seasonal treats that I wish I loved with a passion. It just smells so heavenly! But alas, like donuts, it is one of the many treats that I only enjoy smelling and not tasting. I grew up with a mother who loved eggnog and regularly smelled the treat throughout the holidays, but every time I ever took a sip—yech!
Plenty of people absolutely love the drink, though, so I thought it was worth a post—especially since there are so many ways to enjoy it today. Homemade, store-bought, spiked or plain, here are a few ways to enjoy your eggnog. Feel free to share your own recipes and ideas below in the comments.
Hungry Girl has a recipe for “No-Nonsense Nog” that only has 98 calories if you’re trying to watch what you eat and drink during the holidays. It’s made with soymilk, fat-free instant pudding, nutmeg, rum extract and no-calorie sweetener.
Try eggnog-flavored coffee, cake, flavoring oil or any other products you prefer. There are sure to be eggnog-flavored coffees at gas stations soon (if not already), and there are all kinds of other ways to enjoy the flavor, from eggnog candy to cupcakes. You can also just get eggnog coffee creamer to use in your own coffees and treats at home.
If you want a hearty eggnog recipe complete with cream, bourbon and sheer decadence, try Alton Brown’s recipe. His recipes have never failed me so I’m sure it’s a good one!
