What are yours—and what do you secretly want?

Mother’s Day plans

Every year I get bummed around holidays that honor me—from my birthday to Mother’s Day—because for years I had what we called a “curse” and always had a bad day on these days, no matter what I tried to do. Recently I made the decision to make my own joy happen and boy, has it made a difference. My husband’s not the best planner, so I still get disappointed—but when I schedule something to look forward to myself, it makes all the difference.

So this Mother’s Day, after I see my mom (probably the day before), my plans are to…

  • Take the whole weekend off (something I never do!)
  • Enjoy some sweet red wine
  • Journal
  • Watch a Big Fat Tragic Movie Marathon the night before; I am a sucker for tragedies. There’s just something that feels good about a deep boo-hoo fest. They have to be epic tragedies, though—like The English Patient and Atonement.
  • Enjoy my husband’s homemade potato soup and pretzels

And that’s it, folks! I can’t wait. Last year our stove broke and a million other things happened on Mother’s Day that sucked, but we still made it rock with a Modern Family marathon, courtesy of our Internet connection.

So what are your Mother’s Day plans? Do you have something you secretly want—for real or fantasy—that you want to share? I promise not to tell! I would freak out if my family took a peek in my list of 101 things to do this year and made one of them happen. How cool would that be?

Then again, I can make them happen myself.
