Memorable holiday outfits
When I look through old Christmas photos, the first thing I notice is my long red hair in a headband. Those things were wide and epic, not the mini-bands people wear today, and I am not even ashamed to admit if I could find the same kind today, I’d wear them all over again. The sad thing is, most headbands just slide down my head these days, so I stick to ponytails (and yes, I still use scrunchies! I’m totally living the 80s dream.)
In addition to the headbands, the legging pants with stirrups stick out. Remember those things? You tucked your socks right on top of them and had a completely seamless look worthy of an MC Hammer video. I always had those giant, puffy socks on top—sometimes with little threads of glitter in them—which just made it even more cringe-worthy. The holiday sweatshirts my mom always had us wear weren’t embarrassing, though; they were just red shirts with a screen-print Christmas image. My mom’s always had taste, no matter the decade.
I think my favorite thing about my old holiday photos, though, is that I always had a kid in my lap. A cousin, a sister—I was always surrounded by kids and holding at least one kid, and the kid always looks delighted because, let’s face it, I was fun times (well, to the kids, anyway; school was another story!). I was older than the next oldest child, my middle sister, by six years, so it was always “the kids” and me. I still call my sisters “kid” sometimes, though I don’t mean to do it.
How about you? What kinds of god-awful getups have you worn from the closets of Christmas past? I promise you’ll get no judgment from me.
