Mastodon Fair
If you and your family were hoping to enter the annual Mastodon Fair, the largest combined art and science fair in the country, there is still time to join. They have extended the deadline for entries to Monday, February 18 at 11:59 PM. You can even pay online this year, which is convenient.
The Mastodon Fair takes place at Jefferson Community College in Hillsboro, Missouri, where I grew up. It is available for students in grades K-12, including homeschooling students. Its focus is on sustainability, stability and impact, and the fair leaders hope to encourage youth to embrace these areas and incorporate them into their goals and lives.
At the website, you can browse through both the art and science categories and explore the various qualifications, judging criteria, awards and checklists for participation. You can also check out the galleries from previous winners, safety forms, and much more information. Persons interested in donating to the fair can also do so through the website.
My family will not be participating this year, although we had originally planned on it. Every year, it seems like it just creeps up on us so quickly! Between illnesses and obligations we just haven’t had time to enter something. I’m sure one of Wood Sprite’s various art projects or inventions would have been perfect for entering, but she and I agreed to get ready in December for next year’s fair instead.
