Who knew it was so good?

Making green juice

12/27/13

I have heard about green juice over and over again, and I’ve always said I would try it, but I had no idea it would actually be delicious. The trick, if you don’t like seeing green juice and being reminded that there is, in fact, spinach in your cup, is to drink it out of an opaque container so you can’t see it in the first place.

For our green juice, I’ve been combining some pretty simple ingredients: a handful of spinach leaves or two, a banana, some blueberries and some honey. I’ve also added apple or orange juice to entice Wood Sprite to drink it, which makes it super sweet. I know there are lots of other things you can add, from spirulina powder (which is hard for me to stomach) to chia seeds to pretty much anything you want to add for nutrition, flavor or both.

Technically, I think what I’m making is really a smoothie. It’s in a blender, and I’m not juicing anything. I’m using the whole fruit and vegetable. If you want to try an actual green juice, here is a recipe with apples and celery. I used to actually use a juicer instead, but I find the blender method so much quicker, easier, and less wasteful. I can’t stand throwing away food, and even though I know you can “hide” your pulp in muffins and such, I never used them much and always felt bad about wasting my pulp.

Do you make green smoothies at home? What kind do you like? I’m ready to make all kinds of flavors so let the recipes pile up!
