All you need to make this fun craft is some newspaper, masking tape and paint. That’s it!
You can see that Wood Sprite made her mummy into a cat, but you can make any kind you like. First, roll up your newspaper (or any scrap paper you have, really) and form it into the shape of a mummy. Once you play with it and get it the way you want it, wrap the whole thing in masking tape.
Next, add any details you want. Wood Sprite wanted to make hers into a cat, so she shaped some ears and taped them onto hers. Roll a small amount of paper up to make crossed arms and tape it down, or create a beak to make a crane. Whatever animal or person you want to make, add all the features and just make sure that they are covered in tape.
Next, paint the whole mummy golden. We used acrylic King’s Gold, but you can use whatever you like. Acrylic seems to stick best; washable paint turns out really runny. Wait for it to dry, which should only take a few minutes. Then paint on any facial features, stripes and other items you would like. We used actual mummy photographs to make ours.
Make a whole bunch of these mummies for Halloween decorations. Try making bigger mummies, animals and any kinds that you think of. We did this in our homeschool art club and the kids really enjoyed it.
