How to have fun with your children

10/20/13

I recently saw a post in my blog feed about how to have fun with your kids. All I could think was, “This is a parenting blog! Do parents not already know how to have fun with their kids?” I’d like to think we all try to have a good time with our children every day, but I can see how we get so bogged down under the stress of work, health issues, bills and the daily minutiae that maybe we do sometimes forget to have fun.

As a homeschooling mom I have the privilege of being able to have fun with my child daily. Sunday, for example, we crawled all over the living room under her new Halloween blanket—a birthday gift from her aunt—and acted like a monster. She picked a series of loud, crazy growls, hisses and yowls we had to make, and if either of us accidentally got out of the blanket—which she made sure happened often—we had to re-start the entire sequence. It was so fun and funny that we couldn’t help but crack up.

No matter how busy you are today, take some time to do something goofy and fun with your kids. Do our monster game—we don’t care if you steal the idea! Play tag in the yard. Build something out of the fall sticks and brush around the yard. Make up jokes. Draw on pumpkins. It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive; just stop for some fun together and enjoy one another. If you need to, set a reminder on your cell phone.
