Host a Harry Potter party, part 2
A Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone soundtrack from the library set the mood for our party. We sorted the kids into their houses (I made them clip-on house ties) by drawing their houses from my witch hat, then they played Quidditch by finding the golden snitch that I had made (out of origami paper) and hidden while I served up the following treats:
Fever Fudge: I used this recipe, but I took out the cayenne and mint and made it much more mild. It wasn’t a very big hit, but the kids thought it looked cool.
Polyjuice Potion: I just used my regular punch recipe of Hawaiian punch, Sprite and sorbet. The kids loved it! It’s pretty much pure sugar, so I guess that’s no surprise. I had meant to get green kool-aid to use in the recipe, but Target had been out when we checked there and I thought, “Oh, I’ll get it later.” Of course, I forgot. The kids didn’t care!
Magic Wands: I gave the kids three different colors of icing to dip pretzel sticks in. This was another hit. I had planned on using pretzel rods and melting white chocolate on them and rolling them in sprinkles like I’ve seen other parents do in the past, but we couldn’t find rods so this was another improvisation. The kids enjoyed the dipping process, though.
Dumbledore’s Pensieve: This idea with blue jell-o was so cool I had to do it, even though most of the kids didn’t know what it was. (Most were younger kids who haven’t seen the later films or read the later books yet.)
