Need some fall or winter fun?

Host a cardboard party

10/12/13

This weekend while Wood Sprite is at Grandma’s house, I have been working, but I’ve also been… plotting. I have been scheming up some fun ideas for the winter, since we won’t be able to have park days in December (save for some sledding adventures!). Two moms and I am already talking about some ice skating fun, but I am also thinking of some theme play dates to have at our house.

One idea that I have is a cardboard party, and it’s really simple. I’ll be providing glue, scissors, construction paper, and other craft embellishments. Each child will be responsible for bringing a box. Then the kids can just play with their cardboard and make whatever they wish as they are inspired by their cardboard and the various items I have for them.

Cool idea, right? I’m not the first to think of it, of course. Just look at Pinterest and you’ll see tons of cardboard party ideas. Of course, not all of them are winners, but some look really fun—and this is something that kids of all ages can do.

We did a project in 4-H a few years ago where all of the kids were building items from a box of recycled materials. Wood Sprite built a giraffe, then got in on a robot being built by some other children. Although we love our new 4-H group, we really do miss our old group, too. Too bad we can’t combine them both! The distance is simply too far between them.

What would you add for the cardboard party? Any extra ideas or suggestions?
