Halloween Roundup: Great Halloween family films
These are just my own personal favorite Halloween films, so keep that in mind. There are scarier movies as well as more popular ones; these are just the ones I love.
Spirited Away: This is one of Miyazaki’s best movies, and it includes spirit creatures, witches, demons and monsters—what more could you want in a Halloween movie? If you haven’t seen it, it’s not nearly as scary as it sounds, though there is blood in the movie. I would say it’s appropriate for ages nine and up or so, though seven-year-old Wood Sprite does love it.
The Nightmare Before Christmas: Tim Burton’s holiday classic goes on not just my must-watch Halloween movie list, but my must-watch movie list of all time. I love it that much—and, fortunately, so does my family!
Coraline: Neil Gaiman’s wonderfully frightful story about a girl who must overcome a world full of button-eyed monsters (or one monster, rather, who crafts the whole world up) is nothing short of awesome. Wood Sprite has yet to finish it because she finds it very scary, but I think she will love it when she is older.
Corpse Bride: Wood Sprite’s favorite movie is another Tim Burton film, and I must agree that it is a fabulous movie. She also loves Hocus Pocus, a movie about a trio of witches brought back from the dead. I love the movie, too, and not just because of Bette Midler (but largely because of Bette Midler!). When I was a kid, I even named our black cat “Binx.”
And here are some wonderful Halloween films that star female protagonists (some of which are on this list). What films do you recommend? List them below!
