Geekin’ Out: Maleficent is coming!
It doesn’t take much to get me excited about a movie. Give it a leading woman and a supporting cast and… Oh, wait, I guess it does take a lot, per Hollywood standards! Even so, I have been stoked about the story of Maleficent ever since I heard that Disney was going to make it into a movie. I absolutely love stories where we either learn that villains aren’t really villains—or we learn how they became villains in the first place (with the exception of Oz the Great and Powerful, which was a misogynistic mess). So you can bet that I am super duper exited about Maleficent.
To add to this excitement, I’d like to share these photo stills, interviews and new posters from Once Upon a Blog, my favorite blog dedicated to fairy tales, film and literature. It’s hard to look at these photos and not get excited! I haven’t seen a great movie featuring strong lead females since last year’s Catching Fire and we are totally due one.
Here is the full interview featuring Angelina Jolie. So far, so good—check out the amazing graphics, the faeries and Elle Fanning as Sleeping Beauty/Aurora. I don’t see any focus on romance here, and I really hope it stays that way in terms of the Maleficent back story. They completely ruined the wicked witch’s back story in Oz and it broke my heart. (Why couldn’t they have just gone with the Wicked version?)
Are you looking forward to the movie? This is one that I really want to see in theaters, but I think we’ll wait unless we go on date night because Wood Sprite’s been having Once Upon a Time nightmares lately. We’re taking a break from our show for a while.
