Have you heard that the latest incarnation of X-Men is a team of female superheroes? I’m not exactly sure if I’ve died and gone to heaven—or if there’s a bad moon rising.
See, I love female superheroes, and I complain pretty much every day that we don’t have enough female representation in our media (or accurate, fair representation when present, that is). So an all-star female cast—featuring the likes of Storm, Rachel Summers, Psylocke, Rogue, Jubilee and Kitty Pryde—sounds like a dream come true. Of course, I would have chosen a few different characters—I only see three, possibly four really strong leads here. I would have substituted some of the women from X-Force and X-Factor, myself.
Anyhow, the two main issues I see here are 1. This feels like it’s going to end up using a lot of skin and scanty outfits—more than usual, I mean—to keep a male audience, not because it’s necessary but because people think it is and 2. While I want to see more women represented, that doesn’t mean zero men. Why can’t we just have equal representation?
So far, I like the costumes I’ve seen, and the artwork looks strong and hip. The reviews for the first issue—which I have not read—look really promising, too. My fears may be completely unfounded. I haven’t been in the X-loop for years and am thinking about buying the series this year for both my daughter and me. What a fun way to share my love of X-Men—an actual series featuring a bunch of heroines!
