Plus an interview with Jim Butcher.

Geekin’ Out: Adam Savage’s Gollum impersonation

Each week, I plan on sharing some really fun geeky information, crafts and entertainment in a segment called Geekin’ Out. As I mentioned on Sunday, lots of homeschoolers and unschoolers are known for letting their freak flags fly—and these flags often bear crests of Hogwarts, Middle Earth and Tardis! Being geeky is actually in fashion at the moment (or seems to be), but it used to be very difficult for many “geeky” kids in schools. The love of all things fantasy, supernatural and wizardry is welcome in most homeschooling communities.

So today I’d like to share with you this hilarious recording of Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame doing his Gollum impression. Not only does he sing “I Will Survive” as Gollum; he also does it for Neil Gaiman! Double bonus! Unfortunately we can’t see Adam singing, but we can see Neil cracking up and it’s wonderful. Be prepared to share it with the Mythbuster and Tolkien fans in your house—multiple times.

Then, there is this great interview with Jim Butcher, author of the Dresden Files. I met the books with skepticism at first—the first one just didn’t blow me away, though I was a fan of the TV show—and now I am beyond hooked. I have a huge crush on Harry, but an even bigger one on Butcher himself! Lucky for me, my husband is indulgent—and a fan of the show. I think there is a bit of language on the show, so use it with your own discretion with your kids—but there is also some great info on Jim’s writing process. The program itself is fun, too; I may have to go back and watch others soon.
