When you don’t have the funds to fly, here are some travel alternatives.

Fun ways to travel from home

Before I had Wood Sprite, I loved to travel. I used to travel with the debate team or with activist groups every few months. I even taught abroad for a semester. It’s been 8 years since I traveled anywhere and I’m beginning to really miss it.

We are planning on taking Wood Sprite on her first road trip soon (to where, we don’t know just yet), but until then here are a few things we’ve been doing to travel vicariously.

Pen Pals: We have three pen pals right now, and we’ve had varying numbers over the years. All three of ours live in the United States right now.

Postcrossing: We collect postcards from around the world (and send them, too!), and we mark their spots on a map with pins. We also collect U.S. postcards in a homeschool exchange group; above is a photo of the map we’re using right now to color in the states as we go.

Little Passports: Wood Sprite gets a package each month from a different country. Honestly I’m pretty over it because we pay about $14 and get about $2 worth of stuff most months; we’ve had one month that I thought was actually worth it. She likes it, though, so I’m still paying for it… for now.

Online searches: When Wood Sprite wants to visit Paris or the Great Wall, we Google photos, stories, videos and other media we can experience from home. It’s not nearly the same but it gives her an idea—and hopefully someday we (or she) will get a chance to make these travels.

How do you travel from home?
